I’ve installed the plugin for creating multilingual websites Polylang, and with its option of string translations I have been able to translate my website name and description. I’ve followed the instructions on one of the polylang FAQs and uploaded an wpml-config.xml file into my database to be able to add a different header image in the String Translations option of the plugin.

After many hours trying to find out why polylang wouldn’t recognize my theme strings from wpml-config.xml I realized it doesn’t work with php 7.4 . After downgrading from php 7.4 to php 7.3 now the wpml-config.xml gets recognized and strings are correctly shown in the strings list .

If I add additional custom fields in German, they won’t appear in English. If I delete a custom field in English, it still remains in the German post. Polylang automatically takes the wpml-config.xml configurations, so you don’t need to add more details to cover the two. And as we discussed, whilst not obligatory, using a custom language switcher will give you more control over the structure and class naming. So, you can't update to 14.0 yet, because Polylang isn't ready yet.

Polylang handles the synchronization of the categories, tags and custom taxonomies whether they are translatable or not. Polylang automatically takes the wpml-config.xml configurations, so you don’t need to add more details to cover the two.

Polylang does support the WPML language configuration file wpml-config.xml to avoid double work for themes and plugins author.

Amir. Updated. November 4, 2020. WPML can read a configuration file that tells it what needs translation in themes and plugins. The file is named wpml-config.xml and it’s placed in the root folder of the plugin or theme.
